There's no option to escape that character. When adding the symbol used to wrap placeholders as regular text in the same paragraph of a template, the available solutions are:

• Use other symbol to wrap placeholders (https://www.phpdocx.com/api-documentation/templates/set-Word-template-placeholder-variable-symbol).
• Do not add it to the template but to the new content, so instead of adding $$VAR$ to the template and replace it by the value (100 for example), $VAR$ should be added and then replace it by the value with the symbol ($100 for example).
